The rationale behind the sequel stems from the realization that the technical foundation of the original has reached its ten-year zenith and was showing signs of aging. According to the creators, this technological stagnation hindered SMITE from achieving its full potential across various domains, from graphical fidelity and user interface to audio design and character creation. The first game was constructed on Unreal Engine 3, a platform lacking direct compatibility with Unreal Engine 5, rendering an upgrade technically unfeasible.
In terms of gameplay, SMITE 2 aims to preserve the quintessential blend of battle systems and MOBA mechanics that characterize the franchise. However, developers have harnessed every available resource to make battles more spectacular, infuse creativity into gameplay, and deepen the strategic elements.
SMITE 2 is crafted entirely from scratch with enhanced gameplay mechanics, including movement, abilities, and more. The game boasts updated soundscapes, visual effects, and much more.
The revamped item shop has been meticulously designed for user-friendliness, featuring a novel automatic assembly system with a comprehensive tutorial, streamlined sorting options, and a refreshed item shop interface.
Items are no longer categorized by damage type; instead, the dichotomy of Magical and Physical Damage is supplanted by Strength and Intellect. Consequently, all characters will peruse the same selection of items in the shop.
SMITE 2 will support cross-play across PC, SteamDeck, Xbox Series S|X, and PlayStation 5. The verdict on cross-progression remains pending final decisions from partners.
