5 Things Underwater Photographers Can Be Thankful For This Thanksgiving
By Joseph Tepper, November 24, 2011 @ 07:00 AM (EST)

The Thanksgiving holiday got us here at DPG thinking about what we are thankful for as divers, underwater photographers and ocean lovers. Whether the proliferation of new equipment or seafood sustainable dinner at the holiday dinner table, there is plenty to give thanks for this Turkey Day.

Good Eatin’

Fact: Divers love food. And thanksgiving is the perfect holiday for good eatin’.  What's even better is that Thanksgiving is a mostly seafood sustainable holiday. The only guilt you will have is over that second portion of mashed potatoes you ate.

It might not be turkey, but it's the closest thing we got!

Shopping Excuses

Let's face it, underwater photographers love buying stuff. “Cyber Monday” and Black “Friday” give us two excuses to get more gear-- as if we really needed another in the first place.

Time Off Work

Most people look forward to Thanksgiving break as a time to see family, watch some football, and rake the leaves in the yard. Not underwater photographers. We are different breed. We see the break in the calendar and think, "I bet I can squeeze a few dives in."  Hey, why not start a new tradition and go diving this Thanksgiving.

Tis the Season…for competitions

Thanksgiving marks a great time for underwater photographers to enter the major competitions. The Our World Underwater and DEEP Indonesia are about to open up for entries, and the NCUPS and LAUPS start their judging process soon.

We Still Have Some Sharks

On a more serious note, I think most of us can agree that the shark decimation is one of the key environmental problems our earth is facing, be it land or sea. However, this year marked some key wins for shark conservation efforts including fin bans along the west coast and increased protection in U.S. waters. Give thanks that there are still some sharks left in the ocean, people are starting to recognize their importance, and that they are still as photogenic as ever.

Have a safe, happy, and hopefully diving-filled Turkey Day!
