Richard Herrmann is a professional marine life and nature photographer who uses his background in scuba diving, fishing and environmental science to translate his love of the underwater world into stunning, award-winning photographs. He has spent almost 40 years photographing Southern California and Baja above and below the surface, and his Photographer of the Week portfolio features some of the region’s most iconic marine life, including mako sharks, sea lions, leopard sharks, and Mola mola.

As well as making the coast of California his home, Richard has also traveled extensively and was chosen as staff still photographer for the 1990 “Jacques Cousteau’s Rediscovery of the World” Philippines Expedition aboard the Calypso. Over the years, his images have appeared in hundreds of publications, including National Geographic magazine, Time, BBC Wildlife, Ranger Rick, and Smithsonian. He has also worked as a still and video shooter for major nature feature film companies, including the BBC, National Geographic Society, IMAX and Silverback Films. An accomplished presenter and speaker, he has given presentations to companies and organizations such as Qualcomm, American Chemical Society, London Museum of Natural History, and UCSD Television.

His most recent projects include location management and “making of” footage for 2017 BBC Blue Planet II, 2019 National Geographic’s Hostile Planet, 2019 Netflix Our Planet, 2021 Big Blue Films IMAX “Blue Whales” and 2022 “America the Beautiful” on Disney Plus.
