Schooling hammerhead sharks overhead at Cocos Island, Costa Rica
A student is only as good as the teacher, or so they say. With mentorship from the likes of Keri Wilk, Carlos Villoch, Doug Sloss, Ethan Daniels and Jim Church School’s Mike Megleski and Mike Haber, our Photographer of the Week Marie-Elizabeth Mali had access to quite the tenured bunch.
Marie-Elizabeth started diving in 2000, but it wasn’t until nearly a decade later that she decided to get serious. She began receiving tutelage from some of the industry’s best—and combined with her own practice—she quickly started developing an eye for impactful composition, with impressive control over the technical aspects of image making.
The up-and-comer knows the value of finding the right teacher: Above water, Marie-Elizabeth works as a life and relationship coach. And her background as a poet certainly informs the rhythm and rhyme in the images that follow.
