Originally from Sri Lanka, Manomi Tennakoon grew up surrounded by the ocean, but her journey into the underwater world didn’t begin until 2009. Whilst on holiday in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Manomi completed her first dive shortly after learning to swim. Determined to continue she went on to complete her PADI Rescue Diver and TDS Solo Diver courses, and by 2014, she decided it was time to take an underwater camera with her beneath the waves.
Manomi has a Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry, and when she’s not working in clinical drug development at Johnson & Johnson in New Jersey, she loves nothing more than to travel the world and raise a greater appreciation for the beauty of our oceans. Manomi has been diving throughout Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and the Caribbean Sea, and along the way, she’s learned a thing or two about understanding light.
One of the keys to photography is mastering light and Manomi clearly gets it, creating a beautiful balance between the ambient light and her strobe light. By crafting beautiful underwater images such as these, we are able to communicate the magnificence of this fragile ocean planet—and why it needs more protection.
