For many of us, traveling and scuba diving recently has been almost impossible, but our latest featured photographer Dr. Hanan Atia has somehow managed to combined his passion for underwater photography with his job as an emergency physician in a busy level one trauma center in the United States. Even throughout the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, Hanan has continued to dive locally in his home state of Florida, and although his day-to-day life is exhausting and emotionally draining, there is one place he can escape the mental turbulence of hospital life and that is underwater with his camera.

A diver since a young age, Hanan finds his mind at peace in the ocean where the sound of his breath coupled with the muffled click of his camera’s shutter allows him to enter into a meditative state unlike any other. As you can see, he likes to dive with sharks and has traveled to a number of famous destinations to photograph iconic species such as the whale shark, bull shark and the great white. He also regularly joins blackwater dives in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he swaps his wide-angle setup for a macro lens and goes looking for rare and elusive critters in the abyss in the middle of the night. This combination of big animal images and blackwater subjects makes for an interesting and diverse portfolio, and shows that Hanan is capable of capturing excellent images in a number of different marine environments.

As well as helping people in his professional career, Hanan also volunteers his time and work to ocean conservation organizations, and hopes that his images will ignite appreciation of marine life so that future generations can share the same passionate connection he feels with the deep blue sea.
