Schooling jacks, Cabo Pulmo, Mexico
This week’s featured photographer is no stranger to DPG: His beautiful work has been showcased too many times to count. Born and raised in Mexico City, Christian Vizl has been drawn to the sea for as long as he can remember. He has been an enthusiast photographer since the young age of 15, but it wasn’t until 2010 that he decided to approach photography in a more professional manner. Equipped with a degree in business administration, this uber-talented photographer is also a dive instructor, cave diver, rafting guide, and sailor.
I first met Christian in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, just before setting out on a three-week journey into one of the most remote and extreme areas of our planet—the Arctic. As we traipsed over and under icy landscapes, I enjoyed catching glimpses of this quiet and creative photographer in action. Far away from the tropical waters of his home base of Mexico—and perhaps even a bit out of his comfort zone—he still managed to produce a stunning award-winning image for the 2017 World Ocean’s Day photography competition.
Christian has won numerous other awards for his images, most notably in the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards. He has had his work published in numerous magazines and newspapers around the world, and he is a Photographer-in-Residence at Ocean Geographic magazine and Field Editor for Scuba Diver and Asian Diver magazines.
