Photographer of the Week – Andy Deitsch

Florida is a popular destination for diving and photography, with dedicated shark dives offshore, manatees in Crystal River, and a world-class muck dive at Blue Heron Bridge. This underwater playground is where our newest Photographer of the Week, Andy Deitsch, plies his trade. Andy originally hails from London, England and moved to Florida in 2016 after retiring. He is a relatively recent convert to underwater photography, having first picked up a borrowed underwater camera in 2011. As everyone who has dived with a camera knows, underwater photography is an addictive and thrilling pastime, and it wasn’t long before Andy was hooked.

Twelve years later and he has traveled all over the world, camera in hand, photographing a variety of marine life in both cold and warm water environments. His portfolio includes both macro and wide-angle images from many well-known destinations, such as the Red Sea, the Galápagos Islands, and Grand Cayman, as well as less commonly photographed places like Florida’s freshwater ecosystems or the cold kelp forests of Tasmania. One of my favorite images in his portfolio is the action-packed shot of a schoolmaster cutting through a school of sardines, and judges in the Underwater Photographer of the Year contest agreed, as it was highly commended in the wide angle category.

When he isn’t underwater, Andy can likely be found photographing Florida’s spectacular topside wildlife with a long lens, or shooting aerial landscapes with his drone. He recently partnered with Blue Green Expeditions, a travel and tour company offering trips all over the world. Andy leads trips for them and runs small photo workshops, where he provides instruction on improving underwater images and post-processing—or simply helps people learn how to use their equipment and have fun diving with a camera.
