Photographer of the Week – Sandra Stalker

An ethereal take on a colony of feather duster worms, UK

Sandra Stalker has spent over two decades exploring the underwater world along the coasts of southern England, developing an intimate knowledge of its ever-changing conditions and the remarkable diversity of life found just beneath the surface. Diving year round, often in challenging visibility and temperatures, she has come to see her local coastline not as a limitation but as an endlessly rewarding environment with something new on each dive. Sandra’s work is driven by a fascination with the small and easily overlooked. Focusing largely on macro subjects, she seeks out the “teeny tiny” creatures that many divers pass by and aims to present them as compelling, characterful subjects.

Photography, for her, is both a creative process and a slow, thoughtful exploration. She often revisits the same locations repeatedly, refining her approach and allowing ideas to develop over time rather than chasing quick results. This patient, experimental mindset reflects her belief that underwater photography is as much about discovery and curiosity as it is about technical execution.

Her images have received recognition in a number of prestigious competitions, including the Underwater Photographer of the Year, where she has earned multiple accolades, as well as commendations in international contests such as Wildlife Photographer of the Year and Close-up Photographer of the Year.
