For Max Holba, every dive begins with curiosity. Whether descending onto a vibrant reef, hovering over a muck site or waiting patiently for the perfect encounter with a shy marine creature, the Austrian underwater photographer approaches the ocean with equal measures of technical precision and wonder. His images are more than beautiful portraits of life beneath the surface—they are invitations to slow down, look closer and appreciate the extraordinary stories unfolding on every dive.

Growing up in landlocked Austria, Max discovered scuba diving at the age of 10, a formative experience that set the course for a life centered on the sea. Years later, he would build a career as a dive professional, instructor, educator and resort manager. Based for many years in Indonesia, he co-owns Alami Alor and founded the Alor Photo Academy, where he has helped countless divers transform memorable encounters into compelling photographic narratives.

Max’s work is distinguished by its combination of artistry, natural history and genuine connection to the marine environment. His photographs celebrate both the spectacular and the easily overlooked, reflecting the patience and observational skills that define exceptional underwater photography. Internationally recognized through various prestigious competitions, Max continues to inspire divers to see every descent not simply as an adventure, but as an opportunity to witness—and ultimately help protect—the remarkable world beneath the waves.
