Hailing from Hong Kong, DPG Photographer of the Week Kelvin Leung is an underwater photographer and dive professional. He began his diving journey in 2013 and went on to become a certified scuba instructor in 2023. In December 2024, he further expanded his expertise by earning his freediving instructor certification, marking another exciting milestone in his underwater career.
Kelvin’s exploration of underwater photography began relatively recently, in 2021, with a humble Olympus TG-6. A few short years later, he upgraded to the OM System OM-1. His dedication to growing his photography skills was recognized when he was honored with first place in the Amateur category of the 2025 Through Your Lens Photo Contest, an achievement he feels both proud of and deeply humbled by.
While his feature here is quite diverse, Kelvin is particularly drawn to macro photography, largely due to the challenging visibility conditions in his home waters around Hong Kong, making wide-angle shooting much more difficult. Despite that, he hopes to create more wide-angle images in the coming years as opportunities arise. He is especially excited about an upcoming Red Sea trip in the summer of 2026, which he looks forward to as a chance to further expand his portfolio and creative vision.
As Kelvin continues to explore different underwater photography styles and techniques, he is especially captivated by images that feature strong, interesting backgrounds. One of his favorite photographs to date is a goby nestled within brain coral, a shot that reflects his artistic vision. Through his work, Kelvin hopes to inspire greater appreciation for the beauty of the ocean among Hong Kongers, particularly his students, and to encourage a deeper recognition of the rich marine life found in local waters.
