There’s no substitute for practice for up-and-coming photographers looking to achieve success. Getting in the water to fine-tune underwater imaging skills can be challenging for those of us confined to landlocked or frigid conditions, where all that’s to be seen in our local waters is a whole lot of muck.
You could argue that Eduardo Acevedo has a bit of an edge in this arena—after all, his backyard waters of the Canary Islands are home to whales, turtles, schooling fish, and the occasional shark. Born in this biodiverse region, Eduardo has been in contact with the sea his entire life, beginning with freediving. He earned his scuba certification to get a closer look at the depths, and soon picked up a camera and housing to capture what he saw.
Since 2010, Eduardo’s images can regularly be seen in the winner’s circle of some of the most prestigious competitions, including his most recent and impressive: “Best of Show” at DEEP Indonesia, part of the Underwater Competition Series.
Eduardo’s travels take him all over the world, with stamps in his passports from gems like Polynesia, Malaysia, and the Caribbean. But at the end of the day, his first love remains: “I always [stick] with my Canary Islands for their diversity and clarity of water,” confesses Eduardo.
