A classic anemonefish photographed with a vortex filter, Philippines
It isn’t common we feature photographers from Hong Kong, so this week it is a real pleasure to welcome Andy Pang to the ranks of Photographer of the Week! Andy is a 25-year-old underwater photographer who began his journey in underwater photography in 2022, though based upon his skill level, you’d be forgiven if you thought it had been substantially longer!
Andy is currently focused on macro photography—not only because wide-angle gear is a bit beyond his budget at the moment, but also because it’s the setup he works best with for now. That said, he has a genuine passion for wide-angle photography, believing it has the potential to offer more storytelling and contextual depth. He says he certainly sees himself exploring wide-angle work in the future—it’s only a matter of time, and a few more paychecks!
He is constantly learning and growing as a photographer and is especially drawn to images with compelling backgrounds or those that make viewers pause and wonder what they’re really looking at. Underwater macro subjects are inherently good for that. He loves experimenting with interesting backgrounds and finding the perfect setting to bring his subjects to life. Andy draws inspiration from fellow underwater shooters like Alex Mustard, Angel Fitor, Shane Gross, Grant Thomas, Tim Ho, WeiWei Zhang, and Yai Wai So—artists he deeply admires and continuously learns from.
