A portrait of an endangered dugong beneath dappled sunlight, Marsa Alam, Egypt
This week, we head to Israel for our Photographer of the Week slot with marine biologist and wildlife photographer Amir Fireman. Since his early teens, Amir has been fascinated with the oceans, due in large part to being gifted an aquarium filled with tropical fish. “The vibrant hues and dynamic life beneath the ocean’s surface stirred a profound inspiration in me, leading me to eagerly pursue scuba diving,” he says.
It wasn’t until 2019 that Amir began taking underwater images. Armed with a camera and simple housing, he visited Bocas del Toro in Panama and from then on, he has been hooked on shooting underwater. While on that trip, Amir decided to pursue a marine biology degree, and it was during his academic pursuits that his passion for underwater photography really took hold, while surrounded by like-minded individuals and fellow photographers.
Amir’s gallery here features images from across the globe, from Panama to the Philippines to the Red Sea. Many of his images came from one long period of extensive travel over several months and over 100 dives. But that does not mean he neglects his local waters—the Red Sea. He spends as much time as possible diving here. How lucky to be able to call this spectacular region your “local waters”!
