Photographer of the Week – Allison Vitsky Sallmon
By Lia Barrett, March 27, 2014 @ 02:00 AM (EST)

If you see Allison Vitsky Sallmon on a dive trip, do yourself a favor and don’t be misled by her bright colored wetsuit, or her petite stature.  Make no mistake, this pistol of a shooter and a woman will have you shoveling your preconceived notions back into an abyss of humble pie once you’ve made the connection between her work and her person.

Allison may be the shorter half of the husband wife, underwater duo that is Andy and Allison Sallmon/Vitsky Sallmon; however, what she lacks in height she more than makes up for in imagery and voice.

Having been an avid diver for over 20 years, Allison’s interest in photography really came about around 2006.  But sure enough, by 2007, her thirst for photography took her to the deep end, when she purchased a dSLR, and started using her already established writing skills to supplement what would become a blossoming editorial career.

Living in California, Allison spends many of her weekends in her drysuit. She has also become a regular rebreather user, and takes advantage of the bubble-free freedom that many of us bubblers envy. She has a knack for shooting and withstanding colder climates, yet has a portfolio filled with a range of technical, beautifully composed, and perspectively unique images from destinations throughout the diving world.

So if you see her on a dive boat, don’t let her slip away without probing her about photography.  Make her show you her images.  And when she’s with Andy giving a lecture on using models underwater, have a look at some of those incredible images, and realize that the model in question might just be a man.
