The chill felt by looking at the work of George Karbus doesn't merely stem from his icy, greenish, Arctic images. No, when looking through his portfolio, one cannot help but see his knack for moments and composition, or notice his range in subject matter and ability. George creates the types of images that make you want to get in the water and try something new, find a dolphin and a jellyfish and put them in the same frame, or throw your buddy under some ice and make him hold his breath.
Equipped with a surfer's unruly coif, and emanating a sort of rugged, coastal charm (from his bio pic), this accomplished wildlife, landscape, and surf photographer seems to be doing something right. He spends much of his time dabbling in different photographic mediums, using his abilities of free diving, surfing, and patience to capture the natural beauty and life of the Atlantic, Irish Coast. Taking a step into the amphibious range of underwater photographers, George takes all of his underwater imagery on breath hold, making many of us air hogs feel sufficiently inadequate.
Nevertheless, it takes a certain breed of the adventurous and insane to put yourself in the line of the surfboard, and for those of us too chicken or unwilling, we have people like George Karbus to thank for making the ultimate surfs up sacrifice.
