Wise has announced a new series of CFexpress Type A memory cards designed specifically for cameras in Sony’s Alpha and FX lines. According to Wise, “both the standard CFX-A and CFX-A PRO series unlock the full potential of the cameras” and “read and write up to 3 times faster than the best SD UHS-II media.”
The new cards offer the same maximum read and write speeds of 820MB/s and 730MB/s, respectively, but the 160GB “PRO” card can sustain 650MB/s while the 512GB standard card promises sustained speeds of 200MB/s. That means the standard card won’t be able to handle the most demanding data-rich video files, but the pro-level card comfortably surpasses the 400MB/s sustained speeds that receive the CF Association’s VPG400 rating—more than enough to handle anything that a Sony Alpha or FX camera requires. (Note: The “PRO” card doesn’t appear to have received the VPG400 rating yet.)
Sony was initially the only company producing CFexpress Type A cards—in 2020, it introduced the first such cards in 80GB and 180GB capacities alongside the announcement of the a7S III—but a number of other manufacturers have since joined the fray, including Lexar, Angelbird, Exascend, and now Wise.
Available immediately, Wise’s new 512GB CFX-A512 and 160GB CFX-A160P cards both cost $250.
