Winners of the Mangrove Photography Awards 2024 Revealed
By Ian Bongso-Seldrup, July 29, 2024 @ 08:30 AM (EST)

Overall Winner, Mangrove Photographer of the Year, Supratim Bhattacharjee

The organizers of the Mangrove Photography Awards have announced the winners of the 10th edition of the competition celebrating these fragile but vitally important ecosystems. Hosted by the Mangrove Action Project, the awards saw 2,500 entries by photographers from 74 countries, emphasizing the significance of mangroves across the globe. Winners were selected in six categories—Mangroves & People, Mangroves & Landscape, Mangroves & Underwater, Mangroves & Threats, Mangroves & Wildlife, and Mangroves & Conservation Stories.

Ultimately, it was Indian shooter Supratim Bhattacharjee who was crowned Mangrove Photographer of the Year, capturing the judges’ attention with a powerful photo of a young girl standing in front of the remains of her tea shop in the village of Frazerganj in the Sundarbans following a devastating storm. The largest mangrove forest in the world, the Sundarbans has seen rampant deforestation that has exacerbated soil erosion, leaving huge stretches vulnerable to encroaching waters, especially during the increasingly frequent cyclones.

For underwater shooters, of course, the Mangroves & Underwater category will be of particular interest, with many DPGers among the awarded and highly commended photographers. The category winner, Olivier Clement—a recent DPG Photographer of the Week—joins the winners in the other categories: Johannes Panji Christo (Mangroves & People), Mark Ian Cook (Mangroves & Wildlife), Ammar Alsayed Ahmed (Mangroves & Landscape), Dipayan Bose (Mangroves & Threats), and Giacomo d’Orlando (Mangroves & Conservation Stories). Meanwhile, Nicholas Alexander Hess beat other photographers under the age of 24 to claim the title of Young Mangrove Photographer of the Year.
