Veterinary experts in Vietnam are rushing to save a sick, giant turtle, widely seen as a national treasure for its symbolism of the country’s struggle for independence.
The giant turtle was first spotted with sores on its legs and neck by onlookers, who climbed high into trees surrounding Hoan Kiem Lake near Hanoi, just to catch a peak of scuba diver’s struggle to approach the turtle for treatment. The divers were unsuccessful however, and local officials fear that this 450lb reptile may be nearing the end of its life from contaminants in the lake.
On top of its recognition as a sacred, national symbol, the 100 plus year old turtle is a member of the world’s most extremely endangered species, with only four remaining in the wild! The effort to save his life continues…
