A video posted to YouTube has gone viral and shows up to a hundred sharks feeding on a school of bluefish extremely close to the shore, offering a rare glimpse of a shark feeding frenzy. Some sharks are so focused on the feeding that they are thrown up on the shore by oncoming waves. The video was shot in North Carolina’s Outer Banks by Donnie Griggs, a fisherman, surfer, and diver.
National Geographic spoke with senior fisheries biologist Gregory Skomal about the video. Skomal believes that the sharks are “risking their lives” by coming in so close to the shore and said that such a sighting is rare. Just based off of the video footage, it was hard to identify the species of shark, but Skomal believes they could be blacktip sharks or sandbar sharks.
