 A harrowing hour-long fight between a red squid and owlfish was caught on camera by a remotely operated vehicle in Monterey Bay, California. Despite the fish’s heroic struggle, the red squid was the victor in the end.

In order to kill it, the relatively small squid wrapped its tentacles around the much larger owlfish and used its sharp beak to sever the fish’s backbone. The battle was recorded by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in November of 2013.
