Roger Roth, contest founder and director, notes that this year’s competition offers an opportunity for underwater photographers and videographers to win more than two dozen excellent dive trips, each valued at more than $2000.   “For a $10 entry fee,” he said, “these are tremendously better odds than most lotteries.”

(EDITOR'S NOTE: HE HAS A GOOD POINT HERE, SAME GOES FOR MANY UNDERWATER COMPETITIONS INCLUDING OURS - WE HOPE YOU'RE PARTICIPATING FOR CHANCES TO WIN SOME GREAT PRIZES)

Categories include "Conservation", "Majestic", "Togetherness", "Macro (Open & Novice)", "Wide Angle (Open & Novice)", a "video" category, and a new category added this year entitled “Divers and Marine Creatures.”

The major international charities that the Underwater Images Competition supports include: DiveHeart, Pro Peninsula, and Mahonia Na Dari.  DiveHeart’s mission is to bring the world of scuba diving to physically challenged people.  ProPeninsula is a conservation organization dedicated to empowering communities in Baja California, Mexico to protect and preserve their environment, with their main focuses being on a Sea Turtle Conservation Network which has gained international attention.  Mahonia Na Dari (“Guardians of the Sea”) is a Nature Conservancy non-profit group, which has been working to protect Papua New Guinea's abundant biodiversity by teaching their own instructors and students the importance of sustainability of their own natural resources through hands-on experiences.
