Underwater image-maker and DPG Photographer of the Week Martin Broen has won the “Photograph of the Year” award in the International Landscape Photo of the Year competition (ILSPOTY).

Martin’s fantastic image of a cenote outdid dozens of other fantastic landscape (and “seascape”) submissions. He captured the shot in a chamber between the Chiibal Xuux and Euforia cenotes.

You can—and should—check out all of the winners, here. Sure, the rest are images from above water, but they provide plenty of inspiration. Landscape imagery is amongst the most challenging, as there aren’t any prominent subjects. It’s all about contrast, negative space and balance. Looking for some tips? You may recall that a similarly impressive image by Broen clinched “Best of Show” in the 2021 DPG/Wetpixel Masters Underwater Imaging Competition.
