Imagine… you’re drifting in the open ocean in the dead of night. The endless abyss stretches below you. It’s pitch black and you feel completely and utterly alone (like your buddy, who’s also feeling extremely lonely, and also wondering why you dragged him out here)… You could run into literally almost ANYTHING… Then, suddenly, you’re dazzled by a blinding flash in the darkness and something drifts terrifyingly into view… it’s… it’s… blackwater guru Mike Bartick! And he’s having THE BEST time, surrounded by billions of really tiny animals!
If this sort of dive (with or without an affable Californian) sounds like paradise to you, that’s because you’ve been bitten bad by the blackwater bug… But your all-consuming obsession with blackwater diving is only half the story, of course. The problem is, well, witnessing the largest migration on the planet is one thing, but it’s quite another to photograph the unfathomably weird and wonderful critters rising from the aforementioned abyss. All of which is why you absolutely cannot miss The Underwater Club’s next Masterclass event with none other than blackwater pioneer Mike Bartick in the hot seat!
Founder Nicolas Remy will be picking Mike’s seasoned brains on all things blackwater. By the end of the two-hour session, you’ll have appreciated the science behind it, understood how dives are conducted, discovered what subjects to look for, and most importantly, figured out how to shoot them successfully using the right gear, lighting, and techniques. In addition, as well as answering your blackwater questions, Mike will be providing constructive feedback on (a bunch of) blackwater images sent in by participants. In summary, it’s a blackwater extravaganza not to be missed!
As always, TUC members join for free, while non-members will need to purchase tickets to the event at AU$49 (approx. US$35). Note that this is also the price of monthly membership, so this is the perfect opportunity to join the club and take advantage of all of the membership benefits.
