The second edition of the Underwater Awards Australasia imaging competition—jointly organized by DPG, Underwater Australasia, and UW Images—concluded last year with a well-deserved win for American underwater photographer James Ferrara. In his Behind the Shot article on DPG last year, James shared a little about the Antarctic expedition that led to his epic leopard seal shot which was crowned “Best of Show,” but if you’d like to read more about his experience photographing these charismatic animals—and a variety of other subjects, from icebergs to penguins to humpbacks—you will want to check out the latest issue of Scuba Diver magazine (ANZ edition).
Last year’s Underwater Awards Australasia competition was even bigger than the inaugural edition in 2024, and we’re busy preparing the third edition, with submissions opening in June and the winners presented on the main stage at the next Go Diving Show ANZ in Sydney on September 5th and 6th. In the meantime, don’t forget the 13th Annual World Oceans Day Photo Contest is currently accepting entries. Don’t miss the opportunity to have your work recognized at the United Nations event marking World Oceans Day 2026. Entry is free!
