Ultra-Rare Pocket Shark Discovered
It’s so cute you could just put it in your pocket and take it everywhere. We like to think that’s how the ultra-rare “pocket shark” got its name, after researchers in the Gulf of Mexico discovered the second-ever specimen.
At just the size of your iPhone, this specific specimen spent three years in a NOAA freezer until being discovered earlier this year. Researchers accidentally collected the shark while studying sperm whales after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010.
Truth be told, this little shark is not named for its pocket-sized stature, but rather for a small pocket behind its pectoral fin that may be used for holding and releasing pheromones.
