The Economics of Tuna
The first tuna at the Tsukiji Auction in Japan in 2013 went for 1.76 Million Dollars. With stocks depleted over 90% in the last 30 years, prices are reaching unbelievable levels. The traders and buyers alike seem to turn a blind-eye to the overfishing that has caused this spike in prices. Japanese consume over 75% of the world's bluefin tuna catch with China coming up fast having developed a taste for sushi as well.
