Despite concerns of the Pentagon and coastal communities, U.S. Interior Secretary, Ryan Zinke, is pushing a proposal to permit drilling in most U.S. waters, including protected areas of the Arctic and Atlantic.  Based on the proposal, only one of 26 areas in the Arctic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean would be off-limits to oil and gas exploration. 

Such exploration is opposed by governors from New Jersey to Florida, nearly a dozen attorney generals, and the Defense Department.  The potential for environmental disasters and adverse impact on a lucrative tourism economy have garnered widespread bipartisan consensus in protesting the move.  Despite the lack of support, the Trump administration continues to support the extended oil and gas exploration as part of an energy-dominance agenda.
