The organizers of the Travel Photographer of the Year (TPOTY) awards have announced the winners and finalists of the 2022 competition. Almost 20,000 images were submitted by photographers from 154 countries, with Slovenian photographer Matjaz Krivic winning the title of Travel Photographer of the Year for his images of one of two of the very last northern white rhinos on the planet.

For underwater photographers, two categories will be of particular interest—“Water” and “Green Planet, Blue Planet”—both of which, impressively, were won by the same underwater shooter, Ukraine-born Alexej Sachov. His four images in the “Green Planet, Blue Planet” category powerfully depict the tragedy of man-made ocean pollution, “a great example of a strong message shot simply and engagingly,” per the judges’ comments.
