Tamron has announced an ultra-wide zoom lens for Nikon Z-mount and Sony E-mount full-frame cameras called the 12–20mm f/2.8 (Model A084). The new lens competes against lenses like the Sony G Master 12–24mm f/2.8, which is nearly twice the price and significantly larger and heavier.

Weighing 20.2oz (570g) and measuring 4.7 inches (119mm) in length, the lens features 17 elements arranged into 12 groups, including an XGM (eXpanded Glass Molded) aspherical lens element, three GM (Glass Molded) aspherical lens elements, and multiple additional “special lens elements.” The 12-bladed diaphragm offers an aperture range from f/2.8 to f/16. The lens is weather-sealed in various places but it does not carry an IP rating. The angle of view is 121°58′–94°30′ while the minimum object distance is 7.1in (18cm) at the wide end and 11.1in (28cm) at the other end.

In a departure from previous offerings by Tamron, the 12–20mm f/2.8 features not just sleek styling but also a large number of control buttons around the barrel. As well as a zoom ring and manual focus ring, there’s a customizable control ring (on Nikon Z mount), a manual focus selector switch, an aperture de-click switch, a zoom lock switch, a manual focus locking switch, and two customizable buttons (linked to a new three-way selector switch).

Available from the end of July, the Tamron 12–20mm f/2.8 will retail for $1,700.
