Five spinner dolphins stranded in shallow waters off the Florida Keys have been rescued after a harrowing ordeal.
Rescuers found the dolphins struggling in the shallows near Key Largo over the weekend. The timing is no coincidence: Experts believed the recent path of Hurricane Hermine forced the dolphins out of their traditional deep-water habitat.
The dolphins are at two separate facilities for treatment for dehydration. However, there are reports of even more dolphins suffering the same fate following the storm. According to Palm Beach’s NBC 5, a request has been made to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to extend the search for missing dolphins.
So remember when your flight is delayed or travel plans disrupted by a hurricane, that you aren’t the only one—on land or in the sea.
