Jorge Reynal, Argentina, Winner, Still Life
The World Photography Organisation has announced the winners and shortlisted images in the Open competition of the 2020 Sony World Photography Awards. The annual contest saw more than 100 images shortlisted in 10 categories: Architecture, Creative, Culture, Landscape, Motion, Natural World & Wildlife, Portraiture, Still Life, Street Photography, and Travel.
As you’d expect, various underwater shots made the shortlist in the Natural World & Wildlife category, including images by DPGers Filippo Borghi and Domenico Tripodi, though the category was won by China’s Guofei Li for an (admittedly) amazing shot of cheetahs licking each other after a hunt. The winner in the Still Life category, shot by Jorge Reynal, is of a dead fish seemingly fighting for breath in a plastic bag—a powerful reminder of the plastic pandemic devastating the ocean.
Due to the “other” pandemic, this year’s Sony World Photography Awards exhibition was canceled. The winner of the Open Photographer of the Year title will be announced online on June 9th.
