Sony Is the Top Mirrorless Camera and Lens Brand in North America, says Sony
By Ian Bongso-Seldrup, February 16, 2022 @ 08:00 PM (EST)

Admittedly, Sony had a bit of a head start over heavyweight rivals Canon and Nikon, but several years into the mirrorless game, Sony is still the number one brand for both mirrorless cameras and lenses in North America, based on the value of units sold. That’s according to Sony, who cite data from The NPD Group, a US-based data aggregator that collects point-of-sale data plus online and mobile sales. The data, covering 2021, isn’t pubicly available, but Sony has purchased the dataset and is using it to tout its imaging divisions’ achievements.

According to its press release on the matter, Sony attributes this to “[t]he success of [its] lineup of full-frame cameras, including the Alpha 7S, Alpha 7R and Alpha 9 series,” in addition to “the Alpha 7 III, which continued to be the No. 1 selling full-frame interchangeable lens camera line for the 4th year in a row.” The company also says its “full lineup of 65 different E-mount models highlighted by [its] flagship G Master series continues to drive industry growth.” According to the NPD Group’s data, the new a7 Mark IV set a record for the week of December 19–25, 2021, selling more units in a single week than any mirrorless interchangeable lens camera in the past four years.

What Sony doesn’t tell us, unsurprisingly, is how much Canon—which is known to occupy the #2 spot—is catching up. But with the EOS R5, R6 and new R3 piling on the pressure, it’s clear the mirrorless camera war shows no signs of abating.
