Sony has unveiled new versions of its a7R IV and a7R III high-resolution full-frame cameras. So you can tell the difference, the updated models get an “A” added to their model numbers: ILCE-7RM4A and ILCE-7RM3A, respectively.
But before you get too excited, as per the video description in the a7R III product feature Sony just released (below), a grand total of three things have changed:
- The number of LCD’s dots has been changed from 1,440,000 to 2,359,296
- The Sony logo under LCD monitor has been removed
- The definition of USB has been changed to “SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps (USB 3.2)”
The bump in LCD pixels, from 1.44 million to 2.36 million dots, is welcome, of course. (This is the panel Sony should have put on the new a7S III, which also has the strangely low-resolution touchscreen.) And the USB3.2 port now matches that of the a7S III, which is, you know, nice. As for removing the logo under the LCD monitor? Well, that probably wasn’t really worth mentioning.
The good news is that the a7R IV and a7R III, despite being released almost two years ago and four years ago, respectively, are both extremely capable cameras—with or without this update. Check out our full review of the Sony a7R III in Ikelite housing.
