Pelagic Fleet has announced the official commencement of operations of the brand new addition to its fleet, the M/V Socorro Vortex. The luxury liveaboard, which was designed and built by a dedicated team that includes legendary boat designer Peter Hughes, took its first 14 guests to the Revillagigedo Islands on April 13th.
The Socorro Vortex started out life as James Sinclair, a 140-foot aluminum hull vessel designed for the Canadian Coast Guard in 1981, and over more than a year has undergone a complete refit, including the installation of multi-million-dollar MTU engines and a Rolls Royce transmission. As such, the vessel is now the fastest liveaboard making the 350-mile voyage to the Socorro Islands and the 150 miles to Guadalupe Island—the Vortex’s two awesome big-animal destinations, which together promise encounters with giant mantas, dolphins, humpback whales, and numerous species of sharks, including Guadalupe’s great whites.
Alongside the Vortex’s maiden voyage, Pelagic Fleet has launched the Self-Propelled Ocean Cage (SPOC) for use in Guadalupe. The SPOC, which was previously only used for scientific applications, will be available for charter at an hourly rate, allowing guests to experience safe but even more thrilling encounters with great white sharks.

PRESS RELEASE
The Myth Is Real: The Socorro Vortex Is Now Operating and She Exceeded All Expectations.
On April 13th, 2019, the Socorro Vortex sailed for the Socorro Archipelago, taking her first 14 guests to one of the most amazing dive destinations in the world.
M/V Socorro Vortex has sailed on her maiden voyage to Revillagigedo after over a year of being refitted into one of the best diving liveaboards out there. Much sweat, blood and work have gone into this project, one of the most ambitious individual projects the diving industry has seen so far.
“Few things can compare to seeing your vision materialized. A project so personal, to the point of knowing what’s behind every wall, under each floor, and above every ceiling. Now I can onlywish her fair winds, following seas, and as many happy divers as can be.”
– Jorge Hauser (CEO & Vortex Project Manager)
Everything on the Vortex has been custom made and handpicked to meet the highest standards. This truly is the liveaboard for the discerning diver. The Pelagic Fleet and Peter Hughes (2018 NOGI Award Winner for Distinguished Service) have redefined luxury diving in remote locations. Doubtlessly, the Vortex is now the fastest and most exclusive liveaboard for Socorro and Guadalupe, having quicker crossings and offering the ultimate experience, in and out of the water.
140 feet. 14 guests. This slogan—along with their complimentary premium bar, touch ’n go helipad, free high-speed WiFi, stainless steel jacuzzi, complimentary regional wine and beer, and a 240sqft Master Suite—says it all. This is one fast, floating palace.
Together with the Vortex, we are launching our SPOC (Self Propelled Ocean Cage) for commercial use in Guadalupe. Previously used only for scientific purposes, now will be available for charter at an hourly rate so our guests can enjoy great white sharks like never before.
