The Secret Life of Sharks

Chris Fischer might best be known for his role as a reality TV star on History channel’s “Shark Wranglers,” but it’s his work catching, tagging, and releasing great white sharks that has recently caught the public’s attention.

On September 20th Fischer and a crew of scientists completed a mission off of Cape Cod tagging great white sharks so that they can be tracked and monitored via GPS in real time.

Fischer and his nonprofit organization, Ocearch, hope that the information gathered from the tags, including shark migratory and breeding patterns, will help policy makers make informed decisions.

Ocearch and has also received criticism from environmentalists who claim that their method of catching and tagging sharks is overly invasive and leaves sharks weakened and vulnerable. Fischer denies these claims, telling The New York Times that they are merely “emotional rants.”

You can track the sharks on ocearch.org and read more in The New York Times article.
