The Secret Behind Disco Clams’ Light Show

Disco clams (Ctenoides ales) display a rippling light show underwater, which scientists previously thought was produced using bioluminescence. New information shows that disco clams actually have reflective mirrors that cover their lips and reflect natural light.

Scientists observed the presence of tiny reflective silica spheres on the two-inch clams when watching high-speed videos. Bioluminescence is caused by a compound that reacts with oxygen and emits light even without the presence of natural light. Disco clams do not have this compound.
