SeaLife Announces 52mm Wide Angle Dome Lens and Lens Adapter for the SportDiver Smartphone Housing
By Ian Bongso-Seldrup, November 14, 2023 @ 06:00 AM (EST)

As well as its new six-inch Wide Angle Dome Lens, SeaLife has announced a 52mm Wide-Angle Dome Lens also designed specifically for its SportDiver smartphone housing. Unlike the six-inch Wide Angle Dome Lens, the 52mm Wide-Angle Dome Lens requires the new Lens Adapter for mounting to the SportDiver housing.

Machined from hard anodized aluminum and boasting stainless-steel hardware, the Lens Adapter features a standard 67mm thread, while a 52mm threaded ring is included for attaching lenses with 52mm threads. As such the Lens Adapter is designed to allow SportDiver users attach any close-up or wide-angle wet lens: In order to center your wet lens over the phone’s intended shooting lens, the adapter allows you to easily adjust the position of the mount horizontally and vertically.

The new 52mm Wide-Angle Dome Lens features four optical elements in four groups, and like the six-inch Wide Angle Dome Lens, it is made using high-grade acrylic optics. SeaLife says your phone camera’s shooting angle is increased by 43% and you can get up to three times closer to your subject. Keep in mind that it won’t allow you to achieve split shots like the new six-inch Wide Angle Dome Lens.

Retailing for $350, the new 52mm Wide-Angle Dome Lens is available now, while the new Lens Adapter for the SportDiver housing, which costs $150, will be available in January 2024.

PRESS RELEASE

SeaLife® Introduces New 52mm Wide-Angle Dome Lens for popular SportDiver Smartphone Housing

MOORESTOWN, NJ - SeaLife, the leading maker of underwater imaging gear, has introduced a new compact Wide-Angle Dome Lens for the SportDiver underwater smartphone housing that increases the phone camera’s shooting angle by 43% and allows photographers to get up to 3x closer to the subject depending on which phone lens is selected.

The new lens works with SeaLife’s new SL081 Lens Adapter for the SportDiver housing, which can accommodate 67mm and 52mm lenses, the lens simply threads onto the lens mount. The 52mm WA Dome lens also fits onto underwater camera housings with a 52mm thread mount.

The Wide-Angle Dome Lens design uses high-grade optics arranged in a 4- element/4- group array that delivers crisp edge-to-edge sharpness. The internal elements are fully multi-coated optical glass. The dome lens is optical-grade polycarbonate with hard, anti-scratch coating. The lens has an approximate 13mm film-equivalent effective focal length when used with a phone’s standard wide-angle lens and is waterproof to 200ft/60m.

The “wet lens” design may be attached and removed underwater. The compact, low-profile Lens weighs 11.6 ounces (329 grams) and is negatively buoyant in water. A lanyard is included to secure the lens to the camera or housing, preventing loss underwater.

The rotatable light shade prevents unwanted glare from external lighting or sunlight as well as it protects the dome lens from bumps and abrasion.

The SportDiver 52mm Wide Angle Dome Lens is available now with pricing as follows:

SeaLife® Introduces Lens Adapter for popular SportDiver Smartphone Housing

MOORESTOWN, NJ – SeaLife is introducing a Lens Adapter for their SportDiver underwater Smartphone housing.

67mm and 52mm threaded lenses may be mounted to the SportDiver smartphone housing allowing the underwater photographer to expand their macro and wide-angle creativity. The precision lens adapter, constructed with hard anodized machined aluminum and stainless-steel hardware, mounts directly to the SportDiver’s lens port for a secure, solid fit. The adapter allows for easy horizontal and vertical lens movement adjustments to center the lens over the phone’s intended shooting lens.

The adapter comes threaded with a 67mm opening, for larger diameter lenses. A 52mm threaded ring is included for attaching smaller 52 mm lenses. For other lenses, a step-down ring may be obtained through dive photo or photography shops.

SeaLife is also introducing a 52mm 4-element 0.7x wide angle lens that fits onto the Lens Adapter; the new SeaLife 52mm Wide-Angle Dome lens (Item SL054) increases the phone lens shooting angle by 43%, allowing for a closer shooting distance and improved edge sharpness.

With the multitude of underwater lenses and a wide variety of smartphone lenses available, underwater photographers now have virtually unlimited choices available to them. SeaLife recommends using wide-angle lenses with optical magnification between 0.5x and 0.75x magnification, which allows closer shooting distances while fitting the subject into the image frame. SeaLife also recommends using macro lenses with diopter correct between 3x and 10x. Macro lenses will allow you to get closer to the subject while maintaining image sharpness. Due to the wide variety of smartphone phone lenses in the market, some lens settings may not be compatible.

The lens adapter will be available at Sealife’s USA network of dealers by January 2024.
