James Cameron and his team have released a photograph taken from a recent dive to the seafloor not too far from his famous dive into the Mariana Trench. The photograph, taken by an unmanned “lander,” depicts the Deepsea Challenger, Cameron’s underwater craft. You can also see some sea life, most noticeably an eel in the foreground.
Despite its proximity to the Mariana Trench, this new dive site is considerably less deep at 3,600 feet (he dove 35,756 feet into the Mariana Trench on March 26th).
During this more recent dive, however, Cameron and his team were successful in sending down the unmanned seafloor lander, which they were unable to send down during Cameron’s historic dive on March 26th. Outfitted with a camera and bait, the lander helped procure this photograph as well as sea specimens to bring back for scientific study.
