Seacam Unveils Housing for the Sony a9 III
By DPG Editorial Staff, September 9, 2024 @ 09:00 AM (EST)

Seacam is now shipping its latest housing for the newest addition to Sony’s range of full-frame mirrorless cameras—the a9 Mark III. The ground-breaking camera is the first with a full-frame global shutter, meaning every pixel on the image sensor is read simultaneously instead of progressively scanning across it. This has unique benefits for both underwater photographers and videographers, including the ability to sync flash at any speed and the total elimination of “rolling shutter.”

Like Seacam’s other Sony housings—for the a1/a7S III and for the a7R V, for example—the new a9 III housing has the “compact” designation, reflecting the small form factor of Sony’s Alpha 7 and Alpha 9 series cameras, but it’s the same premium build and finish we’ve come to expect from Seacam. As usual, the housing is milled from a saltwater-proof light metal alloy that is twice hardened and anodized, and top-quality materials are used throughout, including stainless steel and anodized aluminum buttons and dials, offering full control over the camera’s functions. The two housing shells are secured with the company’s titanium Safety Lock fastening system.

Depth-rated to 260 feet (80 meters), the housing features removeable integrated handles and a clear window for viewing the camera’s LCD monitor. The housing can be configured with S6 or N5 bulkheads for reliable electrical strobe triggering, and you have the option of connecting a monitor/recorder via HDMI. Seacam’s optical-acoustic leak detector is fitted as standard, with the vacuum valve and pump purchased separately.

The Seacam housing for the a9 III is available from retailers such as Backscatter, priced at $5,710.
