Following the introduction of its Sony Alpha “universal” housing in 2022 (which can currently accommodate an impressive seven models of Sony camera), Sea&Sea has now released their second MDX-U-series housing—this time for Nikon cameras. The new housing is compatible with the new Z5 II as well as the (aging) Z6 II and Z7 II.
The new Nikon universal housing is listed on Sea&Sea’s website as three different models (MDX-Z7II U, MDX-Z6II U, MDX-Z5II U), even though its one housing with slight internal modifications. It is similar in concept to the company’s other universal housing for Sony Alpha cameras: Different Nikon models can be accommodated simply by adding and/or removing certain parts. Presumably that means the housing will also support the third-generation Z6 III in the near future.
The new housing shares four key features with the Sony Alpha universal housing. First, it has a very large acrylic back panel—much larger than on the company’s (now discontinued) dedicated Nikon Z7 II/Z6 II housing—which provides even better visibility of the LCD while reducing weight. Second, there’s a fiber-optic cable cover protecting the connectors and preventing them from falling out. Third, the company’s Leak Alarm Unit is included as standard equipment instead of as an option. Finally, the housing supports fiber-optic connectivity with compatible Sea&Sea YS strobes in TTL or manual modes via the optional Optical Converter N1 or Manual Flash Trigger, respectively. If you trigger your YS strobes via sync cords, you also have the option of an electrical connection.
