Sea Turtle Eggs Infected by Fungi

Sea turtles, already threatened by habitat destruction and fishing gear, now also face a deadly fungus that infects and kills baby turtles in their shells. The fungus, Fusarium solani, was previously responsible for the mass deaths of loggerhead turtles in Cape Verde.
Researchers believe that the fungus begins by colonizing already dead sea turtle eggs and then spreads rapidly to living eggs, eventually killing them. They found that nests in tidal flooding zones or in areas with high levels of clay and silt were more prone to infection by the fungi.
