Scientists from the Wildlife Conservation Society, the University of Exeter, and the Government of Mexico have teamed up to study the behaviors and habits of the manta ray using satellite telemetry.

Before the study, very little was known about the manta ray. By tracking six individuals, scientists were able to catch a glimpse of their travelling patterns and eating habits.

They discovered that the majority of the manta rays’ locations were recorded in the path of major shipping routes, while only 11.5 percent of the locations were recorded in marine protected areas.

The researchers involved in the study hope that this new information will help them to develop more effective management and protection strategies for the manta ray.
