Rob Stewart freediving
The family of conservation filmmaker Rob Stewart filed a wrongful death lawsuit on Tuesday, March 28 in Broward County, Florida. On January 31, Stewart passed away while scuba diving in the waters off Islamorada in the Florida Keys.
The lawsuit alleges Stewart would still be alive if it hadn't been for the negligence of the dive operator. The defendants listed in the suit are Horizon Dive Adventures of Key Largo, Add Helium LLC of Fort Lauderdale, and dive organizers Peter and Claudia Sotis (operators of Add Helium).
After surfacing from the Queen of Nassau wreck, where Stewart was filming, the family claims Rob was negligently left in the water by crew to attend to Peter Sotis' breathing difficulties. It is thought that Stewart lost consciousness shortly after signaling he was okay. The family hopes the lawsuit will "ensure that people like this don't practice the kind of dives that they put Rob on," his father said.
