Retra Announces New Flash Pro X and Prime X Strobes, and Supercharger X Battery Pack
By Ian Bongso-Seldrup, March 24, 2021 @ 01:00 AM (EST)

Retra has announced updated versions of its Flash PRO and Flash Prime strobes, called the Flash Pro X and Flash Prime X. Like their predecessors, the two models have very similar features and functionality but differ in power: the former outputs 150Ws, while the latter outputs 100Ws. The new strobes are compatible with all the company’s existing accessories.

Retra says they’ve improved on the earlier models in key areas. The housing is now 8% lighter weight, mode and power dials have been reinforced, the strobes recycle up to 25% faster, and they offer up to 20% more flashes per charge. (There’s also a new version of the optional battery pack: The new Supercharger X is 25% lighter than the earlier model.)

In addition, the mode dial now has a dedicated position for high-speed sync (HSS), the company’s E-Opto (electrical-to-optical) converter now connects directly to the strobe (without the need for a fiber-optical cable), and the optical sensing module has been redesigned, with better signal processing. Retra also claims to have improved TTL accuracy and TTL maximum power output.

Shipping of the new strobes will begin at the end of April, and the prices of the Flash Pro X and Flash Prime X are listed as €999 and €899 (excluding VAT) in Retra’s e-shop. To find out how Retra’s strobes perform underwater, check out our review of the Flash PRO.

NEWS RELEASE

Celebrating 10 years of innovation with a new Retra Flash

Retra Underwater Technology was brought into existence by the idea of precise light control in the underwater environment, enabling underwater photographers to create better images at any given condition.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of our pursuit of this idea and to celebrate this unique milestone we are introducing the best underwater flashguns we have ever made: the new Retra Flash Pro X and Prime X

The new Retra Flash Pro X and Prime X are a clear evolution of our flashgun technology and design. We’ve kept all the features you love about the Retra Flash and improved in some crucial areas to extract even more performance from an already powerful package.

What's new?

  • Up to 25% faster recycle times and up to 20% more flashes per battery charge thanks to a optimised flash triggering system
  • New lightweight housing with an 8% reduction of total mass (all existing accessories remain compatible)
  • Redesigned optical sensing module with improved signal processing
  • Direct mounting for the E-Opto converter (no optical cable in between)
  • Improved TTL accuracy and TTL maximum power output (all existing converters remain compatible)
  • Reinforced mode and power dials in case of impact
  • Dedicated HSS mode on the control panel

Besides this we are introducing the new Supercharger X which features a lightweight design that is 25% lighter compared to its predecesor.

The new Retra Flash Pro X and Prime X will begin shipping at the end of April. Deliveries can be expected in the first half of May.
