Reef Sharks: First Large-scale Estimate
By Angela Messina, April 29, 2012 @ 09:59 AM (EST)

Scientists recently published the first large-scale study examining the decline in reef sharks.

Published online in the journal Conservation Biology, their findings suggest that reef sharks have declined by 90 percent among waters that surround inhabited islands. The number of reef sharks that inhabit more remote areas is much higher.

To conduct the study, scientists used a method called the 'towed-diver survey' in which paired divers are towed behind a boat in order to record any shark sightings.

Their findings suggest that regardless of changes in ocean temperatures or acidity, sharks are most affected by the presence of humans.
