RED Digital Stills & Motion Camera (Epic & Scarlet) Revealed
By Jason Heller, November 14, 2008 @ 02:00 AM (EST)
RED, the company known for the super high resolution RED ONE video camera , has been working on a system that captures both video and stills for some time now. Rumor has it this is the reason why we saw the new Canon 5D MkII released with HD video capabilities, a trend we will see continue from traditional DSLR manufacturers like Nikon and Canon. The RED DSMC System , which stands for Digital Stills & Motion Camera, is a game changer. The system is a fully customizable modular system that allows for the same extreme high definition video as RED is known for, while also providing high resolution DSLR capabilities.
The RED EPIC Master Professional
The EPIC features a robust machined body and has virtually unlimited options for frame rates and image formats.

The SCARLET Professional
The Scarlet is compact and lightweight, and supports a wide range of popular motion and stills formats.

Obsolescence Obsolete
The DSMC system (as all RED cameras have been conceptually designed to do) will provide a base to build upon, rather than having to upgrade to a totally new system every time sensors, recording modules or displays improve.
s future technologies or higher resolution sensors are introduced, there is no need to buy a new camera. Instead you can upgrade individual modules, and even interchange Scarlet and EPIC components at will.
REDCODE®
The DSMC systems utilize a proprietary RAW compression called RAWCODE, which records visually lossless images at high frame rates.

A Truly Modular System
RED is onto something here. We are all so frustrated always updating our cameras. They have made it possible to interchange everything from sensors, to monitors, batteries, and lens mounts, and recording modules.

Revolutionary
RED is really shaking up the photography and video industry with this release. Hopefully and undoubtedly this will become the catalyst to more innovation on the part of other manufacturers. The market will need a more affordable interchangeable system. The DSMC system will indeed be quite costly, but for those who are looking for quality, the RED's got it, and in the long run the modular nature of the system may present some cost savings - and definitely somepeace of mind that you can work with the same system for a longer period of time than you can today. We look forward toplaying with the new toys as we get our hands on them.

RED Underwater
As of today, Gates is the only manufacturer making housings for the RED ONE video camera. We suspect that if RED continues on their current path that we will see more support for it in underwater cinematography as well as now underwater photography.
