RED has announced that its 8K Weapon and Epic-W cameras with the company’s new Helium sensors are now shipping. Announced back in July, the new sensors give cinematographers 35-megapixel RAW images at 75fps (Weapon) and 30fps (Epic-W). A video to promote the release (below) demonstrates the advantages of 8K image capture and shows the incredible detail in the footage.
At $29,500 and $49,500 for the Epic-W and Weapon, respectively, the cinema camera “brains” are aimed squarely at professionals requiring state-of-the-art digital video. For your money, you get a 29.90mm x 15.77mm 35.4-megapixel CMOS sensor (8192x4320 pixels), 16.5+ stops of dynamic range, simultaneous recording, Recode Raw and ProRes or DNxHD, and a magnesium and aluminum body (with carbon fiber on the Epic).
