The research—published in the journal Scientific Reports—took into account 40 years of data from the northwestern coast of the US. Recent surveys indicate that there are only 79 orcas left following the death of six resident whales this year alone. The killer whales primarily consume Chinook salmon, which have dwindled in availability in the sound since the 1980s.
According to the study, the Chinook salmon population would have to increase by 33 percent for the orcas to survive. Other threats include noise from motorboats and pollution.
