Protection for Puerto Rico’s Leatherback Turtles

A new law in Puerto Rico protects a 5.4 square mile stretch of coastline that is a major nesting site for leatherback turtles.
The law comes after 15 years of disagreements between developers and environmental activists. Developers fought to build hotels, golf courses, and luxury homes on the site, arguing that it would create jobs and improve the local economy. Instead, the coastal area is likely to become an ecotourism destination.
The site, located in the Northeast Ecological Corridor, is also home to 860 types of flora and fauna and a bioluminescent bay with aquatic microorganisms that glow in the dark.
Leatherback turtles are endangered species.
